The Effects of Drugs on the Brain

By 28 May 2014September 16th, 2021No Comments

The effects of drugs on the brain can be quite devastating. Some drugs can cause damage over an extended period of time while others may have the power to affect the brain within the first use. The effects of drugs on the brain is not something to be taken lightly but when you’re young, you’re simply not thinking or concerned with the effects of drugs on the brain. But you should be.

The effects of drugs on the brain can be widespread

We think of the old adage that states when you’re drinking a beer or some other alcoholic beverage, you’re killing brain cells. And we laugh it off. It’s easy to because the next morning, aside from the hangover that could follow us around for the rest of the day, sometimes even two, we don’t feel any different. We don’t feel those devastating effects of drugs on the brain.

The reason that we don’t feel these effects of drugs on the brain is that the brain is one of the most remarkable machines ever designed and it has the uncanny ability to adjust itself as needed. When drugs enter the bloodstream and head straight for the brain, they numb certain regions of the brain and begin to kill off brain cells.

In other parts of the body, cells can be regenerated, but not in the brain. The effects of drugs on the brain are, in fact, permanent. Once a brain cell is destroyed, the brain needs to find a different path for information to travel from one section of the brain to the next. Considering the average person has over ten billion neurons, or cells, killing a few here and there doesn’t seem like much at all.

Over time, however, given enough alcohol or other drugs, the effect of drugs on the brain will become noticeable. Maybe not to you directly, but to the people around you. The effects of drugs on the brain can be very similar to head injuries. The symptoms, or results, can be anything from memory loss, slower motor function, and even an inability to process information or solve problems that were once simple tasks.

Don’t ever underestimate the effects of drugs on the brain

It would be poor advice from anyone to tell you not to worry too much about the effects of drugs on the brain. These individuals who may espouse this kind of unwarranted information are generally not the professionals whom you seek for assistance in any number of personal matters. These individuals are generally people who are more interested in dragging you out to have a good time.

This isn’t to say that one can’t have an enjoyable evening, drink a few beverages, and let go once in a while. Not at all. But there has to be some understanding and acceptance of the end result.

After all, since the brain is going to working overtime to try and compensate for the damage drugs can do to it, the least we can do as the owners of our brain is to accept what may happen, and then make the informed decision. For those who are experiencing problems within their life, whether it’s an elevated stress level or anxiety, having difficulty remembering simply tasks, or unable to conduct certain aspects of their life as they once did with ease, then drugs or alcohol may be a contributing factor.

The past is the key to the future
